Topic: The Mechanism and Restoring Movement Through the Body
Presented by Corinne Badenhorst and Dr Cuan Wayne Coetzee
Movement is not only something the brain tells the body to do. It is also sensory information travelling from the body back to the brain.
Corinne Badenhorst explores what happens inside the nervous system when we move and why different forms of movement can produce different clinical effects. She examines the regulatory pathways through which movement influences the brain and body, including vagal input, proprioception, interoception, myokines, BDNF and heart-rate coherence. She also introduces the STATE clinical reasoning model for matching movement to the person’s current nervous-system state.
Dr Cuan Wayne Coetzee presents the RE-MOVE phase of Neural Re-Education. He explores how manual therapy, touch, sensory input, proprioception, novelty and graded movement experiences can help the nervous system update its predictions. The emphasis is on improving the quality of the sensory signal and helping the body experience movement as safer, clearer and more trustworthy before increasing the load.
This webinar reveals the mechanisms through which movement changes the nervous system, and how to use those mechanisms more intentionally in practice.
